Swallow

Swallow (Dysphagia)
Did you know that we swallow about 3000 times a day and recycle about 5 litres of fluid?

Now, try not to swallow – hold it! – don’t swallow! What do you feel?

Imagine if you could not swallow: No food, no drink, no taste, texture, seasonal variety of foods, special treats, no sensory indulgence and fun social times over a good wine and fine food.

Eating and drinking not only sustains us, it provides quality and enjoyment of life.

A swallowing assessment involves a cranial nerve and orofacial assessment and analysis of the oral, pharyngeal and oesophageal stages of swallow on a variety of food and fluid textures. A Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) or FEES (fibreoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallow) may be required.
